If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you know that I got a new camera for Christmas! My 10-year-old Canon Powershot A20, which took the vast majority of pictures on this site, has now entered retirement.

My new camera is another Powershot, the SX20 IS. I chose this one because it’s an SLR-like point-and-shoot with a long zoom and image stabilizer.

And now I can do stuff like this:

These buttons, from The Button Drawer, are destined for the Tangled Yoke Cardigan.
The book is going into my shopping cart.

As knitters and crocheters, I am sure we have all heard some variant of the question: “Why would you spend that much money to knit your own [garment] when you can buy that for [ridiculous price] at [Big Box Store]?”

And if you are like me, you get deeply annoyed with this question. I realize I’m probably preaching to the converted here, but…off I go!

See, I was raised to be frugal. But in my house, that did not mean “pay as little money for any single item as possible.” In my house, that meant “choose what you buy carefully, and only buy items that are actually worth the money.” How long something would last was an integral part of the equation.

I once bought a sweater for $25 at Old Navy. Some people would consider this a bargain. I came to consider this a massive waste of $25 (which, in the poorest of my poor student days, was almost a week’s worth of meals). Two months later, it had started unraveling in three places; the ends had been clipped without being properly secured. To repair it, I’d have to find matching yarn, disassemble the sweater, re-knit parts of it, and re-seam it. I had worn it maybe ten times.

Average cost per use: $2.50.

The yarn for each of Big Sack, Hourglass, and Rogue, cost between 3.5 and 5 times the amount of that Old Navy sweater. I wear Big Sack the least, but I am sure I have worn it at least 35 times. The other two sweaters, waaaaaaay more than 50 times, and they’ve also survived a rip and re-knit when I wanted to size them down. All the sweaters remain in excellent condition and I expect them to last many more years, especially now that I live in Houston.

Average cost per use: less than $2.50. By a lot. And that’s not even counting the hundreds of hours of entertainment I got out of knitting them. Seriously, what makes more sense?

Even if I knit with luxury yarns, it is worth every penny to knit garments myself instead of buying cheap pieces, made by who-knows-who in what kind of conditions, that I’m just going to have to replace after one season anyways.

However, I am (chronically) on a yarn diet. Considering the limits of space, budget, and sanity, this is the best thing, trust me. Thus I need to cast on something from stash. But I’m not sure what! Tell me, help me! What should I knit?

Lace. I have a skein of Sundara silk earmarked for a scarf/wrap thing for my mother-in-law. It’s a beautiful pink with the occasional streak of sage green. I was thinking of making one of these, but am open to other suggestions.

Socks. There are quite a few options here, but the downside is that all this sock yarn has been earmarked for my own designs. Or it might be an upside, depending on how you feel about my designs—if you like them, you might vote to kick me off my duff and get one done. The percolating designs are:

Purple all-over lace sock

White sock with lace cuff and eyelets down the leg and foot

Hot pink heavily-cabled sock

Blue-green sock with one cable panel

Toy. I’ve got yarn to make a toy version of an oomingmack.

Sweater. I’ve got the yarn for these:

Probably not the Vintage Pink Cardigan, as that’s also a sea of stockinette, but maybe the Venezia, which has colorwork to keep it interesting and would be perfect for knitting to podcasts.

Thoughts? Suggestions? What do you want to see me knit?

I kept telling myself that it hadn’t really been that long since I last blogged. And here we are, one week shy of two months since my last post.

I’d have rather been blogging.

What started out as a weeklong visit to my dad turned into twelve days. His health kept getting worse, to the point where he could not be left alone, and my mom needed help. I stayed as long as I could until my aunt (my dad’s sister) was able to fly out and take over.

I came home, moved apartments, and discovered that my internet access didn’t move with me. I filched flaky wireless from a neighbor for three days.

That’s when I got the call from my brother to get on a plane ASAP. I flew out less than 24 hours later. I arrived on March 4. On March 17, my dad died, surrounded by the entire family.

They say that modern medicine has made the concept of death foreign to most of us, such that many of us are incapable of recognizing the signs that death is near.

I say that as long as you have heard of the “death rattle”, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never heard it before. The second that sound starts you will know exactly what it is.

I am ok-ish. I have the best support network a girl could ask for, honestly. While I will miss my dad and am sad that he’s gone, he doesn’t have to suffer anymore and that’s important.

Mostly I am exhausted. If I take the Life Stress Test, the events from the last two years add up to well over 300 points, which means

High susceptibility to stress-related illness
Daily practice of relaxation skills is very important for your wellness. Take care of it now before a serious illness erupts or an affliction becomes worse.

And I didn’t even add the additional 20 points I’ll incur next week when I fly to Taiwan, not for “vacation”, but for “my dad’s second funeral, and this time I get to speak in Chinese” so it’s probably worth more than 20 points. No wonder the grey hairs are sprouting like weeds. Yet I feel like I’m shamelessly whining. My mom is still chugging and her stress test comes out to over 400.

So please forgive me if I take it a little easy on the blogging for the next month or so. If nothing else, I need a knitting break to catch up on my hideous backlog of work. I imagine I’ll be back up to full speed May-ish.

One word from the radio show kept tickling my brain. AY-what? Some astronomical mumbo-jumbo. AY-ka-something? Magnitude, constellations, blah blah blah, AY-ker-nar? OMG, they’re talking about Achernar!

The star, of course, not the cabled scarf knitting pattern.

Turns out I’ve been mis-pronouncing it in my head all along.

Shedir is named for a star and so naturally I turned to the heavens for inspiration in naming the scarf I designed as a companion to Shedir. The patterning on the scarf seemed to suggest a flowing river, so I hunted around for a river constellation and named the scarf after Achernar, the brightest star in Eridanus.

A new crochet project while the Pieced Throw blocks…

…and some new knitting resolutions for the coming year.

Write more patterns. This will begin with the release of a new cabled scarf pattern, hopefully this weekend. Like my previous patterns so far, it will be free to download but I hope those who knit it will make a donation for however much they think the pattern is worth.

I’ve got about four different sock ideas kicking around in my head, along with two toy ideas. I want to submit something for publication and also start selling patterns myself.

Knit more sweaters. Remember when I said this?

I will be wearing a Tangled Yoke Cardigan this fall and winter or I will eat my Addi Turbos.

Well…Addi Turbos nom nom nom. I have yarn for three sweaters stashed. Time to knit it up.

Blog more. I’m going to aim for an average of two posts a week, or eight posts a month. To help kick this off, I’m going to write a series on psychology and knitting. Tentative topic list, in no particular order:

Spatial reasoning I — schematics

Spatial reasoning II — charts, charts, charts!

Learning and expertise I — the value of effortful practice

Learning and expertise II — conceptual v. procedural, process v. project

Math education — can knitting really help you learn math?

Those are the big things I want to do with my knitting life. I’m also planning to re-design the site in the very near future, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

I have to admit, yarn shopping takes a back seat when the alternatives include visiting Kinkaku-ji.

On our last day in Japan, my mother-in-law took us to Yuzawaya. Check out the knitting sheep logo!

Yuzawaya isn’t so much a yarn shop as a craft department store. Japanese department stores are somewhat legendary for their size and the range of services they offer and Yuzawaya fit the bill. The basement was food, as is traditional for a depato. First floor was fabric and floral arranging. Yarn was on the second floor. Yarn, notions, spinning wheels, and knitting machines. And random breads and bake mixes.

I browse yarn with a future knitter of Japan…

…and stop to ponder this pink crocheted bag. The pattern is free with purchase of yarn!

What color shall I make the bag? Surely not this hideous yellow I am holding.

If you look right above my head, you can glimpse a couple spinning wheels on display. (And that’s my mother-in-law in the background.)

Oh look! Wall of Noro! Most of the yarn in the store was sold by the bag and the Noro was no different. I try to think of a yarn shop in the US where I could walk in a buy a nicely-packed bag of Noro, instead of having to dig through a bin looking for matching dye lots.

I encounter a British Sheep Breeds poster and am taken in by some kind of longwool.

The haul was ultimately small, as I do not yet own a Mary-Poppins-style suitcase. But I came away with both yarn and books:

Clockwise from top left we have: an amigurumi book of crazy adorableness (of course), Tebukuro & Handowoma (gloves and handwarmers), Kantan Nitto-wadorobu (easy knit wardrobe), and the pattern and supplies for the pink crocheted bag I was looking at.

I’ll probably post more in-depth commentary on each book, but I did notice that all three books are contain both knit and crochet, and the projects in the “Easy Knit Wardrobe” book are quite a bit more difficult than the average easy knits book in Barnes & Noble. I bet there are cultural differences in the exposure to, and the value of craft that are well worth exploring. Plus it will give me a chance to practice my Japanese!

It’s a common theme for most of us, I think. We craft. We perceive just how huge the crafting industry is. And…nobody else gets it.

But I found an unlikely craft appreciator on our way back from our trip.

We were tired. Due to gross airline incompetence, we were over twelve hours delayed in getting home (they did put us up in a hotel overnight, but not without quite a bit of haranguing). I was half asleep aboard a Super Shuttle and the driver and another passenger were having a conversation about what it’s like to be a shuttle driver.

“You can make some good money from now until April. I make 30 or 40 grand in the spring alone, but the rest of the year, it’s slow.

“It’s not the holidays; people traveling for the holidays, that’s nothing to us. It’s the conventions, see. Houston is a big convention city and that’s when you can make a killing. We just had the quilt convention…man! I love the quilt convention!”

The other passenger expresses surprise that a quilt convention would be a big draw.

“I know! Who woulda thought it? But yeah, little old ladies and their quilts! They get out here and spend some serious money!”

My brain grumbles at the “little old ladies” remark, but I’m too tired to object.

“This year was a slow year because of the economy, but they still had 20,000 people! Last year it was closer to 50,000! Super Shuttle gives us a list of the upcoming reservations every day so we can see how many people there are. Normally it’s like, 400. During the quilt convention, it was 2,000! A day! I love the quilt convention!”

And there you have it.

A post on my Japanese yarn-shopping experience will be coming shortly.

If any of my readers are also in the Houston area, I hope y’all made it through too. Except for the empty fridge, all systems are back to normal here.

The last project with tiny cables that I did were the Denmark Socks, finished nearly a year ago. Long enough for me to forget how much my wrists hate extended cabling with skinny yarn. Or really any fancy maneuvering with skinny yarn.

I blame the Blunti Stumpos. Working cables in fingering-weight yarn with regular Addis is like folding origami with oven mitts on, but more painful. It’s frustrating, requires a lot of contorted finagling to do what I want, and it makes my carpal tunnel flare like no other.

I have thus resigned myself to withdrawing from the Ravelympics I never entered to begin with. I will finish the socks later this month, after I give my wrists a rest. So I leave you with this photo, taken right after I finished the gusset decreases and was on the homestretch to Olympic glory.

I was sporting the original Quinn bag, as usual, when I heard a voice from behind me in the checkout line.

“I recognize your bag! I made one!”

She had lots of nice things to say about the pattern and the bag. I was so busy being extremely weirded out that not only are you people on the other side of the internet real*, but y’all actually knit my stuff, that I forgot to even ask her name.

So, mystery Quinn knitter if you’re reading this…hi! Please out yourself in the comments! And feel free to describe how doofy I am in real life, hehe.

—
*It’s not like I haven’t met internet people before, but for some reason it never stops being weird to me.

It’s sort of been a grumpy week so far. Well, it’s sort of been a grumpy month or two, but this week has been no good. Yesterday was a good day but Monday nearly made me cry and today started out good and rapidly went downhill. I was such a frowny mess when I got home that I ate potato chips and ice cream for dinner (don’t do that, your tummy won’t like it).

I’ve been seeking out happiness where I can find it this week so, in addition to giving the froggy some arms and a new mouth, I made these:

In which case, I should totally market them to harried mothers and become filthy rich in the process.

But I’m hoping that today will be the end of the grumpiness, or at least the worst thereof. I had a breakthrough moment on my walk home today: I am grumpy because I am overwhelmed.

I literally have nothing on the needles right now. Ok, not quite literally, as I have about four rows of a tiny tube knit up after I got it into my head that I was going to design a sock. And then I quit. But beyond that, nothing. Not so much as a baby hat.

I have a couple of toys on hooks, one of which you saw here, but that’s it.

And it occurred to me the other day that I’m just uninspired. The projects out there are plenty inspiring. But the yarn I own…meh.

I’ve never been a big yarn stasher. Limited income (poor grad student) and limited space (poor grad student apartment) just make it impossible to really stash. If you remember, my entire stash looks like this:

And right now, those green drawers are easily half empty. The basket mostly held yarn for the Ombre Blanket and is now three-quarters empty.

This year has been an expensive year (though for good, happy reasons) and I just can’t justify buying yarn when I had, at last count, almost thirteen miles of it. Except for the ball of green Plymouth Encore being used for the amigurumi frog ($5.75), I cannot remember the last time I bought yarn. I’ve just been knitting through what I’ve got, and I’m officially sick of it all.

Thirteen miles of yarn, all earmarked for projects, and I don’t want to cast on any of it. Not the Alpaca Silk, long earmarked for the long-coveted Vintage Cardigan by Norah Gaughan. Not even the gorgeous laceweight from Sundara, because I wanted to design something special for that, and that requires time (something else I don’t have much of right now).

If I had a random stash of non-earmarked yarn, I could at least do something. Swatch exciting stitch patterns. Make a purse. Some random socks.

Instead, I’ve got thirteen miles of earmarked yarn, and not a yard I want to knit. What is up with that?

You won’t tell anyone if I go splurge on something pretty this weekend, will you?

I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but I have never knit anything with a tweed yarn. Go ahead, check out the finished projects. No tweed yarns. But then I started lusting after Eunny’s Tangled Yoke Cardigan, which is knit with a tweed yarn, and all of a sudden I wanted to learn more about tweed.

Tweed‘s first two chapters are full of the history and making of tweed yarn. Did you know that:

Coco Chanel popularized the use of tweed fabrics in high fashion?

tweed yarns are more prone to felting?

The third chapter contains stitch patterns with pictures of swatches knit up in tweed yarns. This chapter was especially useful to me, as a tweed newbie and fledgling knitwear designer, to see which patterns are made more interesting with tweed yarns and which patterns are strong enough not to be obscured by the tweed flecks.

The last section is full of knitting patterns, grouped by skill level. There are 22 projects total, including hats, scarves, bags, sweaters, vests, pillows, and throws. Although all of my favorite projects below happen to be sweaters, sweaters make up less than half of the total pattern count.

Pattern previews after the jump!

Like many people, I keep an array of doohickeys and knick-knacks on top of my computer, the better to gather dust with. And I just realized that my doohickeys and knick-knacks are either: a) small plush toys, or b) random knitting that I didn’t know what to do with.

The Yoshi beanie is wearing a cape, which happens to be the first thing I ever knit that has both knit and purl stitches in it. I came home from my knitting class, thrilled that I had managed to produce a mostly-even swatch of off-the-cuff stitch patterns and couldn’t bear to just hide it away somewhere. So Yoshi got a cape.

The first baby hat I ever knit. One of my friends had a baby shortly after I learned how to knit and I was determined to make her some baby thing. But I wasn’t yet confident in my ability to make gift-able items, so I bought a ball of the cheapest yarn I could find to practice on. This was the practice hat. Of course, I discovered after I went to knit the real hat that kitchen cotton behaves really differently from wool blends.

This is a recent addition. And it’s not knitting. Did I mention that I was trying to crochet again? Ah yes, I did. It just clicked for me this time around and I’ve made quite a few random swatches and medallions just to prove to myself I know what I’m doing now. And I made a dismembered frog head. There will be a body eventually. Until then, it will continue to stare down at me creepily.

It’s a little bit incongruous, working on the other Anemoi Mittens while surfing for summer tops. But my life is a bit incongruous right now, as I’m dividing my time between Pittsburgh (brrrr), Milwaukee (brrrrrrr!), and Houston, Texas.

And starting this summer, I will be living in Texas full-time, so I might as well look into this business of knitting for warm weather.

If I were to knit this, I’d probably add an inch or so of regular ribbing at the bottom and at the sleeves to give it a more finished-looking edge, and I’d probably make turn the sleeves into regular cap sleeves instead of knitting them straight down from the armhole.

I think I carded some wool, once. I was in middle school. Or maybe it was something for Girl Scouts. We were on a field trip to a farm.

I got my Ravelry invite today. I didn’t even know until I went to check the impatient alpaca, who told me my invite was sent TODAY. A search through my spam trap quickly turned up the invite.

There’s nothing in my profile right now, but I’m registered as cogknition.

The first thing I did was to check if any of my patterns existed in the database. And guess what, they’re all there! Cool! I found a few more finished projects that I will add to the pattern pages.

Question for existing Ravelers: Do you find it helpful to have the photos from Flickr posted with the projects? I’m guessing the answer is an overwhelming yes. I ask because I don’t currently have my knitting photos posted on my Flickr account—I just host them locally here, and I would have to upgrade to Flickr pro to have the space to do so. I’ve been thinking about upgrading my Flickr for a while, and this may push me to do it.

Ok, off to add stuff to my profile!

Update: OMG OMG OMG *head explodes with the amazingness*

I found a group titled PhD Procrastination. Fantastic!

I’m definitely going to have to get my pics up on Flickr and then up on Ravelry. In the meantime, if you’ve friended me, could you drop me a note saying who you are? I just kind of want to know if I know you under a different username, or if you read my blog, or if you’re just super friendly to newbies. Thanks!

10196 people are behind you in line.

46% of the list has been invited so far

8396!!! That number only has four digits! The ravelry blog says they’re now inviting 500-600 users a day, which means I should be getting my invite in a little over two weeks at this pace. Woo!

In other news, I can’t seem to keep a single piece of lace I knit. I took the curved shawl to show my grandma when I went home to visit last weekend and…it decided to stay there.

But I should have FOs to show you guys soon. ABC is airing the Badger game tonight and football games make for great knitting time. On Wisconsin!

I didn’t rip Rogue today. It took me three hours to rip Hourglass, and frankly that was enough frogging for one evening.

In other news, I’m writing up the pattern for the baby booties, as requested by Liz. But I need a name for the booties! Any suggestions?
