I've also started some things destined to be gifts:

Since finishing the Tangled Yoke Cardigan, I’ve started another sweater. Behold:

It’s the Vintage Pink Cardigan that I first blogged about 2.5 years ago. I figured I’d get a jump start on it and try to finish it by January. Which is when it gets “cold” here.

I’ve also started some things destined to be gifts:

It’s Which Came First? from Mochimochi Land, because every child needs a little existential angst. Also, I can’t read. For some reason I thought this toy would be actual egg-sized. And it is, if you mostly hang around ostriches.

And finally, I had to scratch the sewing itch. I’ve wanted to learn how to do patchwork and quilting for so long, but was frankly procrastinating out of fear. Fear that, try as I might, I would never be able to achieve the precision required to make beautiful pieces. But the fabric stash wasn’t getting any smaller (which wouldn’t be a problem except our apartment isn’t getting any bigger either), so last night I decided to bite the bullet.

So I have been knitting.

If by "knitting" you mean knitting and re-knitting the same section of sweater over and over again. I am now officially a working stiff (of the hellish-commuting/lots-of-overtime variety), which means on a good day I'll get to sneak maybe 20 minutes of knitting before I pass out on the couch. Anything more complicated than stockinette is now completely beyond me.

So I have been knitting.

If by “knitting” you mean knitting and re-knitting the same section of sweater over and over again. I am now officially a working stiff (of the hellish-commuting/lots-of-overtime variety), which means on a good day I’ll get to sneak maybe 20 minutes of knitting before I pass out on the couch. Anything more complicated than stockinette is now completely beyond me.

I reached the yoke part of the Tangled Yoke Cardigan, attached the sleeves, and continued working merrily along in stockinette. Until I discovered that I’d missed the decreases on the row where I attached the sleeves. Frog. Re-knit.

Missed the first round of yoke decreases. Frog. Re-knit.

Got to the cable pattern and miscounted the number of stitches between the 5-in-1 increases. Frog. Re-knit.

Missed the second set of 5-in-1 increases. Frog. Re-knit. Re-knit wrong, frog and re-knit again. It’s still wrong, so I frog and re-knit again, this time successfully.

I finish the cable pattern, and the next round of yoke decreases, and feel all proud of myself that I finally finished the hard part and can go back to zoning out on stockinette.

And then I looked more carefully. Check out the picture above again. Notice something?

Here’s a hint:

There were four dots on the chart that I thought were purl stitches. Turns out they were bobbles.

So I finished the Cobijita Floresita blanket. After knitting 13 petals for a 10-petal flower. I discovered after the seventh petal that I'd mis-counted the rows on three of them. Riiiip, and re-crochet. But now it's done. This is how it looks blocking.

And then I frogged a bunch of stuff to re-claim the yarn.

On the left, seven hanks of Cascade 220 reclaimed from that intarsia bag that I never felted. Then some tan Cascade 220 reclaimed from a large swatch. And finally, some Mission Falls 1824 wool superwash rescued from a sweater my brother was knitting (and mostly completed) but never finished due to fit and construction issues.

I also started a hat project. About five times because I kept changing my mind about the design of the hat. Ribbing or no? Two-by-two ribbing or one-by-one? Long tail or tubular cast-on? I thought the sixth time would take, but it turns out that the hat is sized to fit a basketball, not a human head. Riiiiiiiiiiiip.

It’s the start of the Cobijita Floresita crocheted baby blanket by Mia Zamora Johnson, aka Owlishly. Pattern available on Etsy and on Ravelry. Check out her other stuff too, it’s adorable.

So far the best thing about this blanket is that it’s almost entirely done in double crochet. That’s about all my brain can handle right now, cuz after a couple weeks of intense thesis writing and revising, she be fried.
I was tempted to leave it. If the mistake can't be spotted from the back of a galloping horse, who cares, right? But you know who could spot a mistake from the back of a galloping horse? An eagle.

Time to tink.

So I decided what to knit, though it’s none of the options I presented in my last post. I cast on for the Autumn Arbor stole (first introduced to me by graciechiao) with the Cherry Blossom Silk Lace from Sundara.

And then I brought it to knit night. And then I continued to work on it while attempting to watch soccer coverage in Spanish, which I barely understand but am trying to learn. This is what happened:

I was tempted to leave it. If the mistake can’t be spotted from the back of a galloping horse, who cares, right? But you know who could spot a mistake from the back of a galloping horse? An eagle.

Time to tink.

I believe firmly in tinking over frogging for virtually any kind of mistake, no matter how far back it is. Frogging is reserved for whole-project errors, or if I have less than two rows completed. They say in programming that you introduce a new bug for every ten lines of code you write. I believe there’s a similar rule for knitting, that you make a new mistake about every X stitches. Tinking means re-knitting fewer stitches and that means you’re less likely to make a new mistake in the course of your repair.

Of course, proper set-up for tinking makes all the difference. Clear your workspace. Get good light. Banish children, pets, husbands, and liquor to another room. Failure to do so is like being a surgeon at Seattle Grace.

Continued after the jump.

However, I am (chronically) on a yarn diet. Considering the limits of space, budget, and sanity, this is the best thing, trust me. Thus I need to cast on something from stash. But I’m not sure what! Tell me, help me! What should I knit?

Lace. I have a skein of Sundara silk earmarked for a scarf/wrap thing for my mother-in-law. It’s a beautiful pink with the occasional streak of sage green. I was thinking of making one of these, but am open to other suggestions.

Socks. There are quite a few options here, but the downside is that all this sock yarn has been earmarked for my own designs. Or it might be an upside, depending on how you feel about my designs—if you like them, you might vote to kick me off my duff and get one done. The percolating designs are:

Purple all-over lace sock

White sock with lace cuff and eyelets down the leg and foot

Hot pink heavily-cabled sock

Blue-green sock with one cable panel

Toy. I’ve got yarn to make a toy version of an oomingmack.

Sweater. I’ve got the yarn for these:

Probably not the Vintage Pink Cardigan, as that’s also a sea of stockinette, but maybe the Venezia, which has colorwork to keep it interesting and would be perfect for knitting to podcasts.

Thoughts? Suggestions? What do you want to see me knit?

It’s been a slow knitting year. Six months gone, and there’s only four items on my 2009 FO list, only one of which is an actual knitting project!

I will say though, that that list isn’t entirely…accurate. See, I’ve been working on Secret Projects. They are not my Secret Projects, or even Gift Projects. But things I’ve been testing/developing for other people, and thus they are not bloggable projects.

But I think I can get away with posting these without running afoul of my promise to keep things hush-hush:

Illuminating, I know. I will reveal as soon as I’m given the all-clear.

Update 06/29/2009: The first project revealed!
Update 05/30/2010: The second project revealed!

Two more:

Update 07/06/2009: The third project revealed!

I can tell you that both of these are purses I’ve been working on as part of a collaboration. The first one is done and somewhere in the pre-release stages. The second one is in progress. There is a third in the planning stages. Not going to say more at this point.

I can, however, post fully about this:

The long-awaited Tangled Yoke Cardigan, in progress. I’d cast it on back in February, when I flew to visit my dad for what would turn out to be the second-last time. I couldn’t bring myself to pick it up again until recently, when it was the only project of mine that I could actually knit in public. It’s chugging along now and I think I should be able to finish it in time for the sweltering heat of August. Never say I don’t plan ahead.

Once upon a time I bought 11 skeins of Cascade 220 for two different felted bag projects. Both were intarsia patterns of my own design. One was easy, one was hard.

I knit up the easy intarsia bag. I charted the hard intarsia pattern.

And then I stopped.

Because you know what? I hate felting. And I hate intarsia. And simultaneously inflicting both on myself not just once, but twice? Clearly I’d gone cuckoo in the head.

And so the yarn and non-felted bag sat in my stash for two years. 2420 yards of yarn that I no longer had any use for. Now clearly I’m doing something wrong here, but yarn in my house gets mighty pissy if it isn’t already earmarked for a specific project. I hear it muttering yarny threats at me when I walk by, demanding to be made into something pretty or else it will smother me while I sleep.

Why no, I’m not the least bit neurotic, why do you ask?

Once the yarn has devolved into this mildly-evil state, there is only one solution: knit (or crochet) it up and give it to charity. Infusing the yarn with good karma soothes it and makes it happy again.

Given that I’m dealing with a whopping lot of 100% feltable yarn, I decided to crochet a blanket for the current Afghans 4 Afghans campaign. I cast on (chained on?) last week…

…and see? The yarn is already feeling better.

Sleepy Snake is done, except for the wash-and-dry.

Occasionally he turns into Narcoleptic Ouroboros.

Now I just need to knit him a few victims friends. I plan to make 3-4 of Mischievous Mice, and here are the most mouse-appropriate colors in my stash:

Right now I’m leaning towards blue mice with cream-colored tails (bottom left in the picture). I could also do white mice with cream or tan tails, or maybe just make each mouse a different color combination. Hmmm…

Behold, my latest Saturday Sewing:

Behold my latest Saturday Sewing, the pencil bag from Craftlog:

Saturday Erranding did wind up taking precedence over Saturday Sewing, but do not be deceived: what you see here is something like four hours of work. My seam ripper and I are the best of friends now; I attempted that topstitching three times before it came out straight. And now the zipper isn’t laying flat. I think I know what went wrong; I’m trying to decide if I should rip the whole thing out and just start over because I am Super Anal Retentive like that. Update: ripped and re-sewn. Much better now.

Lesson learned: when installing zippers, baste early, baste often. Marking a straight line on the fabric would probably help too, at least until I figure out how exactly I’m supposed to use my bizarro zipper foot. Update: I just needed to move the needle to the center position to get sewing in the right places.

On the knitting front, I’ve been working on a Sleepy Snake. It has a head now, which will hopefully make people realize that I when I say I’m knitting “a snake”, I mean a literal snake.

Why is this under Project Problems? The problem is not with the pattern. The pattern is wonderful and well-written. But you know how knitting projects sort of develop personalities? Well, my Sleepy Snake didn’t really like being toothless, and uh…

I hope they give him indigestion.

(But seriously, are you as amazed as I am by how realistic the head shaping is?)

I love the way it’s turning out, but it’s approximately as interesting as knitting garter stitch.

Remember when my best attempt at crochet looked something like this?

And then something clicked and I made this…

<img class="post" src="http://www.cogknition.org/uploads/frog-done.jpg" width="400" height="300" alt=Frog on a Holiday" />

…and this.

<img class="post" src="http://www.cogknition.org/uploads/obake2.jpg" width="400" height="300" alt=Omusubi Obake" />

I’m getting the hang of this crochet thing, I think. And I like it. It’s a welcome alternative to the endless scarf project in my sidebar, a project that I cannot blog about because I hope to submit the design somewhere for publication.

And so I started another crochet project.

<img class="post" src="http://www.cogknition.org/uploads/pieced-2.jpg" width="400" height="300" alt=Pieced Throw" />

It’s the Pieced Throw from Simple Crochet by Erika Knight, adapted for four colors instead of just three. It’s pretty mindless—just miles of half double crochet—but really, really fast to work up.

I like this crochet thing.

The last project with tiny cables that I did were the Denmark Socks, finished nearly a year ago. Long enough for me to forget how much my wrists hate extended cabling with skinny yarn. Or really any fancy maneuvering with skinny yarn.

I blame the Blunti Stumpos. Working cables in fingering-weight yarn with regular Addis is like folding origami with oven mitts on, but more painful. It’s frustrating, requires a lot of contorted finagling to do what I want, and it makes my carpal tunnel flare like no other.

I have thus resigned myself to withdrawing from the Ravelympics I never entered to begin with. I will finish the socks later this month, after I give my wrists a rest. So I leave you with this photo, taken right after I finished the gusset decreases and was on the homestretch to Olympic glory.

...it's one week into the competition and I'm still working the heel flap, even after shaving a few inches off the legs to make ankle socks (per my usual sock preference). It's taken me two days to work maybe six rows of the heel flap.

Two weeks ago, I was all set. I would enter the Ravelympics. I would do the Sock Put. I would knit. I would win! I would sit there and bask in the glory (and warm feet) of gold-medal-worthy socks.

But yet it seemed like a copout. A mere pair of socks in 17 days? Sock Wars veterans scoff. Clearly I needed a high start value to make an impression on the judges. Thus, I would knit a pair of socks of my own design, a design that’s been swirling in my head for a while and requires charting a non-repeating cable pattern.

And then the move happened. In my packing haste (which made me miss my college days when it took two hours to pack and clean a dorm room), I forgot to set aside the sock yarn I intended to use. Right now it’s sitting in storage with the rest of the stash, to be retrieved at some unknown date. My knitter’s graph paper is in a box, maybe in storage, maybe in one of the as-yet-unpacked boxes in the apartment.

Time for Plan B. I’d wanted to knit the Bayerische Socks for a while, and this seemed like a good time. Teeny tiny cables should be worth a high start value. I made a trip to Yarns 2 Ewe for some suitable yarn and cast on during the opening ceremonies.

Of course, I cast on during the NBC tape-delayed opening ceremonies, which meant that I missed out on 13 hours of valuable knitting time.

Which isn’t going to matter in the end, because I forgot to sign up for the Ravelympics in the first place.

Which is just as well, because it’s one week into the competition and I’m still working the heel flap, even after shaving a few inches off the legs to make ankle socks (per my usual sock preference). It’s taken me two days to work maybe six rows of the heel flap.

In retrospect, it was a bad idea to pick a project that requires so much attention, as lovely as the socks are. It’s hard to work tiny twisty cables while Jason Lezak is running down Alain Bernard, y’know?

It’s sort of been a grumpy week so far. Well, it’s sort of been a grumpy month or two, but this week has been no good. Yesterday was a good day but Monday nearly made me cry and today started out good and rapidly went downhill. I was such a frowny mess when I got home that I ate potato chips and ice cream for dinner (don’t do that, your tummy won’t like it).

I’ve been seeking out happiness where I can find it this week so, in addition to giving the froggy some arms and a new mouth, I made these:

In which case, I should totally market them to harried mothers and become filthy rich in the process.

But I’m hoping that today will be the end of the grumpiness, or at least the worst thereof. I had a breakthrough moment on my walk home today: I am grumpy because I am overwhelmed.

(Actually, there no kinds of frog legs I would eat. I’m very much an omnivore, but amphibians are on my list of Animals that are Not Food.)

You might have also noticed that I removed the mouth. I decided it looked too…lusciously porn-y.

That photo makes a good game of Spot the Clutter on my Desk. I have never in my life been able to keep a clean desk. This caused many fights with my mom when I was younger. Now I just happily pile away.

But I did also cast on for something simple, single, and in a chunky wool.

I got this far during the Super Bowl and an episode of American Gladiators. From here on out, it’s all stockinette, baby!

I think I jinxed myself when I mentioned my frogging spree in a recent post. Behold, the Anemoi Mittens:

On the left, we have a finished right mitten. On the right, we have the cuff of the left mitten in progress. Notice something different?

Mm-hmm. The second cuff is way bigger than the first.

What do I do? I could just rip the second cuff and start over, except that it’s actually the right size; the first cuff is a bit tight. Plus I’m not really happy with how the top of the mitten turned out.

But that involves frogging a whole mitten! At the rate I’m knitting these (it took me three whole weeks to do 24 rows of corrugated rib, because let’s face it, corrugated rib sucks), they won’t be done until April. On the other hand, this sort of size difference is exactly the type of thing that will bother me until kingdom come.

What to do, what to do…

While I figure that out, I think I’m going to go cast on for something simple. That doesn’t come in a pair. In a chunky wool.

Shortly after I cast on for the Haruha scarf, temperatures dropped below freezing. I traded Shedir and Achernar for my Cold Weather Big Guns: a double-thick wool hat I bought from Montreal and a giant wool/angora scarf/wrap that my mom bought for me, and then I made it that much warmer by a slight accidental felting. Cold’s got nothing on these guys.

It occurred to me one night, as I sat on my couch, wrapped in aforementioned scarf and covered in a blanket, knitting away on some delicate black lace, that this was foolishness. Haruha is no match for winter. Haruha is a lovely fall or spring fashion scarf, not a cold-weather workhorse.

I put Haruha aside and cast on for the Anemoi Mittens.

Made double-thick by stranded knitting and sealed tightly at the wrist with a cuff of corrugated ribbing, these mittens will be just the thing to replace my current gloves, which just stop abruptly at the wrist without the faintest gesture towards actually keeping out the cold. I’ve taken to wearing these gloves over my Endpaper Mitts, otherwise they do no good.

And of course now, we are back to warmer fall temperatures. Knitting for the weather is clearly about as good an idea as trying to time the stock market.

NaKniSweMo is over. I wore Rogue yesterday, decided it needed some finesse in the shaping, and am now re-blocking it. So I guess I didn’t make the deadline. Boo. But I did finish all the knitting in November. So I’ll call it a half-victory.

But I’ve been knitting almost nothing but sweaters (re-knitting old sweaters, in fact) for the last two months and now I really want to cast on for a billion tiny things.

Already in progress, the Haruha scarf:

I wanted a black lacy scarf and had bought some Joseph Galler Superfine Prime Alpaca for this purpose. I had originally planned to design the scarf myself, but then I found this pattern on Ravelry and decided it was perfect.

Other items in the queue for December:

Another pair of Wave of Babies Booties, after which I will post the pattern

Anemoi Mittens

Tillie, if I ever manage to decide on a color

St. Peter Port Stripes Socks, from Folk Socks

Snowflake Socks, from the Fall 2007 Interweave Knits

And a hat for my dad (who, after six months of chemo still has a full head of hair), if my mom, dad, and I can ever agree on what constitutes a warm and wearable but not-doofy hat.

Currently, we are at an impasse. My dad likes those hats with furry brims and earflaps, and my mom and I both find those Extremely Doofy. My mom likes this one hat she bought, which I also find Extremely Doofy, and my dad refers to it as a Communist hat. I rather like the ski hat from Never Knit Your Man a Sweater, but I suspect my dad won’t like the top.

Ahh, the joys of knitting for family. If you know of any not-doofy patterns for a man hat, please leave a comment.

Today is the last day of NaKniSweMo.

Rogue’s sleeves are knit and blocked. I have seamed one sleeve and am wearing it, in true bad 1980′s music video style, while I seam the other. Aran-weight wool is blessedly warm.

The body is knit; the hood is attached and grafted. The ends are woven in. It is blocking. As soon as the bloody wool dries, I will set the sleeves and call it finished.

But if it doesn’t dry by midnight tonight…am I still finished? Do I win? Or do I have to have an actual, wearable sweater for it to count?

Behold, a proper swatch:

Remember Rogue? And the size issues? And the hair-drying and the dryer-drying and the frogging?

I learned my lesson. Behold, a proper swatch:

In the background, we have the not one, but two swatches I did for Hourglass. In the round, like a swatch for a seamless in-the-round sweater should be. Hourglass is done, by the way, and is blocking as we speak.

In the foreground, the swatch for Rogue. The bottom half of the swatch is in the round. The top half of the swatch is flat. The swatch was washed and blocked. I get gauge in the round and in the flat. The Swatch is Good. Time to cast on!

I've just finished the body for the re-knit of my Hourglass Sweater. Let's check out the fit, shall we?

This is the original Hourglass.

I’ve just finished the body for the re-knit of my Hourglass Sweater. Let’s check out the fit, shall we?

This is the original Hourglass.

Note the excess fabric around the bustline and the hips. Not to mention the bagginess of the sleeves.

Here’s the way it looks now:

It fits snugly in the bust, smoothly through the waist, and hangs neatly at the hips with no excess. Much better, eh?

Embryo sweaters:

Baby sweater:

Ghost sweaters:

These are the sweaters I crave. They haunt my dreams at night, begging to be knit. On the top left, we have the Vintage Pink Cardigan by Norah Gaughan from the Spring 2005 Interweave Knits. Top right is the Venezia Sweater by Eunny Jang from the Winter 2006 Interweave Knits. Bottom left is a cabled cardigan by Margaret O’Leary from the Fall 2006 Vogue Knitting. Bottom right is the Tangled Yoke Cardigan, also by Eunny, from the Fall 2007 Interweave Knits.

The yarn for the first two sweaters is already sitting in my stash, except for one ball of Jamieson’s Spindrift that I’m going to swap out for a different color. They are in the queue for whenever I finish my frantic re-knit of the Hourglass Sweater and Rogue.

If there is still winter left when I finish those, then I will cast on for the other two sweaters. I have wanted a black cabled cardigan exactly like this one for years. I see everyone wearing one, but for some reason I cannot find one I like in stores—something is always wrong, whether it be cut, fit, or quality of materials. Knit out of the right yarn, it will make a good all-season garment.

The Tangled Yoke Cardigan, well, it’s just pretty.

Now if only the blasted weather would cool off again so I can knit without sweating. Is that really so much to ask?
