Pattern: Saturday Night, by Lauren Abrams and ME!
Yarn: Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, Cavern, 2 skeins
Needles: US 6 (4.0mm) and US 7 (4.5mm) Addi Turbos

Saturday Night, aka Mystery Project #3, is the first result of an ongoing collaboration with Lauren Abrams.

Lauren is the woman behind LaBeana Bags. Her designs are beautiful and she is a joy to work with. The look of the bag is all hers, I’m just the one behind the scenes, translating her art into a knitting pattern. Not that knitting can’t be art, but my role in this project is more of an engineer.

I hope you enjoy the pattern as much as I enjoyed helping to create it.

And yes, Mystery Project #4 in the sidebar is also a Lauren collaboration. I’ll be shipping her the finished sample this afternoon.

Other pattern news: I’ve made two small corrections to the Amy Scarf pattern (fixed a typo in row 17 of the pattern, and deleted an erroneous knit stitch in the instructions for KRL). Please download a new copy!

Redesign: All Clear! (I Hope)

Aaaand we’re done! If you notice something looks weird or doesn’t work, please either leave a comment or e-mail me. Be sure to note:

In case you’ve forgotten already, here’s what the blog used to look like:

The new design has the same feel as the old one, but should load faster and it makes better use of the available screen space. The trade-off is that it’s less friendly to those at 800×600 and below.

Less Obvious Changes:

New pattern templates. Achernar has been significantly re-worked, the rest just got a facelift.
About/Contact pages are gone. Everything you need to know is in the top right corner.
New commenting functions and organization. Go ahead, try it! We’ve got gravatars, threaded comments, and subscribe to comments so you can get an e-mail whenever a new comment is posted.

Plus lots of nifty changes to the backend that make my life easier.

And remember that scarf pattern? It will be up later this week. A sneak peek (unless you’ve already seen my Ravelry projects):

Redesign, Phase II: Theme Rollout

I’ll be rolling out and adjusting the new theme over the next few hours. Please hold all “things are wonky” comments until I give the all-clear signal—I’m switching from a non-widget 2-column theme to a widget-ready 3-column theme so things will disappear and reappear and move around as I port things over.

Edit: I’d estimate I’m 2/3 of the way done. I still need to fix the pattern pages and add them back to the sidebar and also check the feed. But I’m going to take a wee break to watch Good Eats!

Edit 2: I’m just about done for tonight. There’s still a lot of work I want to do on the pattern pages and I want to re-write the comments template, among other things, but this will do until I can pick it up again tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Edit 3, the next day: The only thing that’s left (I hope) is to re-write the comments template to take advantage of some new features in WordPress 2.7

New Year, New Beginning

A new crochet project while the Pieced Throw blocks…

…and some new knitting resolutions for the coming year.

Write more patterns. This will begin with the release of a new cabled scarf pattern, hopefully this weekend. Like my previous patterns so far, it will be free to download but I hope those who knit it will make a donation for however much they think the pattern is worth.

I’ve got about four different sock ideas kicking around in my head, along with two toy ideas. I want to submit something for publication and also start selling patterns myself.
Knit more sweaters. Remember when I said this?

I will be wearing a Tangled Yoke Cardigan this fall and winter or I will eat my Addi Turbos.

Well…Addi Turbos nom nom nom. I have yarn for three sweaters stashed. Time to knit it up.
Blog more. I’m going to aim for an average of two posts a week, or eight posts a month. To help kick this off, I’m going to write a series on psychology and knitting. Tentative topic list, in no particular order:
- Spatial reasoning I — schematics
- Spatial reasoning II — charts, charts, charts!
- Learning and expertise I — the value of effortful practice
- Learning and expertise II — conceptual v. procedural, process v. project
- Math education — can knitting really help you learn math?

Those are the big things I want to do with my knitting life. I’m also planning to re-design the site in the very near future, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Wave of Babies Booties, Knitting Pattern Posted

These are my sanity-restoring baby booties. I’ve had the pattern written up for forever, I just needed to knit more samples. And then I knit the samples, but just needed to take pictures. And then I let the pictures sit, even though all I had to do was plop them into the pattern, convert to pdf, and upload.

Oh, and update the web site. Which is done now, so I’m going to bed. While I sleep, you can download the pattern and knit some booties.

Tinkering Under the Hood

And now a word from our webmaster…me.

I’ve been messing around on the backend of all my blogs, upgrading things, installing things, uninstalling things, and whatever the web-equivalent of kicking the tires is. I pressed my luck by mucking around in the main database itself without making a proper backup.

I was a computer science major. You’d think I’d know better than to do that, but I don’t.

Anyways. I don’t think I’ve broken anything, but if you notice anything odd, please let me know.

One of the things I’ve been working on is the feed. I’ve disabled hotlinking site-wide because I don’t have the patience or the money to deal with bandwidth thieves. This site sucks a crazy amount of my bandwidth as it is. But the upshot of that was that the images didn’t show up if you were using a feed reader.

I’ve enabled the images for Google Reader, and I’m working on Bloglines as we speak. If you’re using some other feed reader and can’t see the images, please post a comment and let me know what that is.

Or maybe I should just hotlink all the images from Flickr. I had to put them all over there for Ravelry’s sake anyways, and bought a pro account in the process, so I might as well suck their bandwidth, right?

We will return to our regular knitting content shortly!

Red Herring Scarf: Pattern Correction

The original pattern contained an error in row 3 of the herringbone stitch w/moss stitch border pattern. It should read:

Row 3: k1, p1, k1, k1, [k2, inc 1, k2, k2tog] until last 3 stitches, k1, p1, k1

A corrected version of the pattern can be downloaded from the Red Herring Scarf pattern page.

Looky, looky, it’s done! I was a little uncertain about the design as I was knitting it, but I do love the finished product. It looks great either under or over a wool pea coat. The finished fabric has a nice, flowy drape, but is still nice and warm. This one’s a winner.

If you keep tabs on my progress bars to your left, you may have noticed that Quinn #2 hit 100% a couple days ago. You know what that means? I finished writing the pattern and posted it!

Free Quinn Cabled Bag Pattern

The complete package is a 9-page pdf, with nice big photos and instructions in charted and written form. I daresay it looks like a real knitting pattern.

I’m pretty pleased with what I put together, although the true judges will be you, my fellow knitters. I had a lot of fun designing Quinn, I hope you will have a lot of fun knitting it!

Are we live? Ok.

I imagine that moving a web site and teleportation involve similar sensations. Even though you know in your head that the technology is perfectly safe and reliable, you still feel the need to pat yourself all over and check for missing body parts once you’ve arrived. Or at least the sensations would be similar, if teleportation was safe and reliable or, y’know, existent.

Please note that everything, including the RSS feed, has a new URL and change your bookmarks/links/blogrolls accordingly. Hopefully you were forwarded directly from wherever you were on the old site to the exact same spot on the new site. Please let me know if you find any broken links, images, missing comments, or other web-teleportation shenanigans.

I’ve also added some book reviews that I had originally posted on a different site.

Mysterious Happenings Behind the Scenes

So I haven’t posted as often as I would have liked to lately. One reason is that life goes a little haywire when you have a grant proposal due and two conference presentations to give the same week.

The other reason is that I’ve been doing a little webmonkeying. This site will be moving to its own domain shortly. It will have a new layout, a new engine, and some other new stuff. Keeping the number of posts, particularly posts with pictures, to a minimum will make transferring the old entries to the new system a little bit easier.

I hope to have the new site launched relatively soon. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek:

Blue is a little bit more my speed. See y’all on the flip side.

Greetings, loyal readers of Thought Bubbles and fellow knitters! Welcome to CogKnition, my knitting-themed spin-off site.

Currently the only entries are the entries about the Stitch and/&/’n Bitch controversy that I previously posted on Thought Bubbles, but I plan on posting new content soon. In the meantime, here’s the State of the Knitting Union:

Sew Fast/Sew Easy has started another round of harrassment via Yahoo. At this point, I think it’s best that knitting groups moved their home base to another site. I’m looking into free and paid possibilities; more on that later.

Rogue (I’d say 80% finished) and the Ombre Blanket from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts (45% finished, on hold until I order more yarn)
