Straight-Laced Socks

July 13th, 2006 | 8 Comments

Speaking of de-feet…

Finished: Straight-laced socks!

Pattern: Straight-Laced Socks, from Knitty
Yarn: Fortissima Socka, #1005, 2 skeins
Needles: 2 sets 16″ Addi Turbos, US 1 (2.5mm)

This was my first pair of socks, ever! I feel like I’ve come of age as a knitter. I wet-blocked both socks, squeezing as much water out as I could, and then laying them on a towel and making them sock-shaped. Blocking softened up the yarn nicely. The socks also grew a wee bit after blocking, which was great because they were a little tight before and now they fit better. I probably should have made the foot or toe a little longer, but they still fit pretty well.

Knitting these socks was tremendously fun—lace! socks! what’s not to love?—and kind of trying, as I struggled with both the yarn and the pattern.

Admitting Defeat

July 9th, 2006 | 3 Comments

Earlier today, at approximately the same time that France was lamenting Zidane’s headbutt and Trezeguet’s shot into the crossbar, a friend of mine was celebrating her nuptials. That would be the friend for whom I was knitting the Print o’ the Wave stole as a wedding gift.

Oops. No edging at all might have been ok. But five repeats of an edging with a bunch of live stitches won’t do.

(The corner of the lamp you see in the picture, by the way, is one of the many new apartment doodads I got this weekend.)

I am not admitting defeat by the stole—it will be finished and it will be gifted sooner rather than later—but I have been wholly defeated by time, or at least my lack of appropriate time management.

I’m also going to pre-emptively admit defeat for the baby shower I’m attending on Tuesday. I thought I might be able to knock off some booties, but that’s not looking likely either. In my defense, I only found out about the shower last week.

Goodies from the Mailbox

July 3rd, 2006 | 3 Comments

When I left my house to make a quick run to the grocery store, I discovered a bunch of goodies waiting for me on my porch. First, there was a package from a friend who had been whooping it up, -style in Germany, as well as the giant cone of Zephyr I mentioned in my previous post.

The giant cone of Zephyr, plus a German knitting catalogue

The Zephyr is from eBay seller sarahsiegel and should go nicely with the aloha dress. If anyone else is looking for a giant cone of Zephyr, I highly recommend buying from Sarah. She shipped it super fast and also enclosed a bunch of samples for me to ooh and aah over.

The catalogue is titled Treffpunkt Wolle, which AltaVista helpfully translates as “meeting place wants”. Uh huh.
