Cable and Rib Sweater w/Hood

Pattern: From Debbie Bliss: The Baby Knits Book
Yarn: Elann Peruvian Highland Wool, #3103, 7 skeins
Needles: Addi Turbos, US 7 (4.5mm)
Itty bitty clothes! I love it! I unfortunately don’t have an appropriately-sized model for the sweater, so you’ll just have to imagine some cooing baby wearing it in Mongolia.
This is the smallest size, designed to fit a 1-year-old. The pattern is lovely and easy-to-follow, except for two things: no schematics, which are awfully helpful when blocking, and unnecessarily fiddly hood shaping. The pattern calls for you to do the hood border in two separate sections, and then seam them together when you sew the top of the hood together. The problem with that is that you then have to reverse the seam when you do the border, since it’s supposed to be turned back like a shawl collar.
I opted to do the hood shaping using short rows and then connected the two halves via three-needle bind-off. Then I just picked up stitches all the way around and knit the ribbed border in one piece.
I really like this sweater and would probably knit it again. After I knit a bunch of the other utterly-adorable items in this book.

I bet you could! The construction is pretty darn simple, even with the hood.

[…] The Yosemite top in the latest Knitty also looks like a keeper. I love cabled ribs and shawl collars! […]

That’s so cute! It came out perfectly. I am trying to find a baby sweater pattern for a friend and I really like this one. I wonder if I could replicate it in fingering weight yarn??
