Like Derek Redmond, if he knit. And if he had needed another two months to finish his race.

The Bayerische socks, with their tiny, twisty cables, are done. Eunny’s design is, as usual, impeccable, with twisted ribs flowing gracefully into cables which flow gracefully into the slipped stitches of the heel. The sock is very stretchy and should comfortably accommodate a wide foot. I worked two pattern repeats for the leg to make ankle socks. Four-and-a-half pattern repeats over the length of the foot fit my size 7N feet perfectly.

I will be heading to Japan at the end of this week and plan to check out a yarn shop or two. I imagine the knitter’s-eye view of Japan to be a cross between Mochimochi Land and a candy store. If candy were made of yarn. Stay tuned for my report!

These are my sanity-restoring baby booties. I’ve had the pattern written up for forever, I just needed to knit more samples. And then I knit the samples, but just needed to take pictures. And then I let the pictures sit, even though all I had to do was plop them into the pattern, convert to pdf, and upload.

Oh, and update the web site. Which is done now, so I’m going to bed. While I sleep, you can download the pattern and knit some booties.

Yay, cute!

I’m exhausted (not from making the booties) and that’s all I have to say. I plan to make another pair in a slightly larger size and then post the pattern.

I love them.

The pattern is simple but lovely and easy to knit. I made a few very minor modifications. I knit fewer leg repeats, in keeping with my preference for ankle socks. I also knit a longer heel flap and made a shorter and less pointy toe. The pattern calls for decreasing until you only have 8 stitches left; I grafted the toes together when I still had 20.

I have to say, I’m still not a fan of the yarn. It’s soft and squishy and bloomed nicely after blocking, but it’s also very splitty and I suspect it’s not very hard-wearing. I have four more skeins of this in the stash and I’ll have to think hard about whether I want to knit them up or sell/swap them.

I do think part of my troubles were due to the Addi Turbos Blunti Stumpos. I think I will probably invest in some KnitPicks Options or Addi Lace needles soon, because knitting with the smaller-sized regular Addis is torture.

Even so, handknit socks = bliss.

Pattern: Hedera, by Cookie A. for Knitty
Yarn: Lang Jawoll, #88, 2 skeins
Needles: Addi Turbos, US 2 (3mm)

Thanks for the nice comments on the Ombre Blanket! It made its way over to my bed the last couple nights and did a lovely job of keeping me toasty warm. I even woke up with warm feet!

Speaking of feet, I’ve finished my Hederas, which I don’t think I’ve shown on the blog until now. These have officially taken over as my favorite pair of hand-knitted socks.

The Lang Jawoll is lovely, plush and soft. It feels much nicer against the skin than Fortissima Socka, which is kind of rough and doesn’t wear particularly well.

The pattern is pretty standard, easy to memorize and easy to knit.

And the fit! Whereas all the socks I’ve knit so far have been a tad too small, or in the case of the Straight-Laced Socks, too big in the heel and too small in the toe, these are perfect! And they may have converted me to the flap-and-gusset heels. Short-row heels are quick, but they’re limited in terms of being able to adjust the fit. Flap-and-gusset heels really let you customize the fit of your socks, and that’s a plus.

And now I’m faced with the paralyzing fact that I only have one project on the needles. ONE! It’s kind of a scary thought.

I liked Grumperina’s so much I had to make myself a pair.

I mostly knit the pattern straight, except for doing 12 rows of ribbing at the top—I basically converted the middle stitch of each soon-to-be-cable-twist into a purl—making them ankle-length, and then doing a short-row heel.

The finished socks are a wee bit short. I may wind up ripping out the toes and making them just a tad longer. Even so, I am zeroing in on the magical sock formula that will make socks that perfectly fit my feet.

Tomorrow: New Year’s Knitting Resolutions!

This was my first pair of socks, ever! I feel like I’ve come of age as a knitter. I wet-blocked both socks, squeezing as much water out as I could, and then laying them on a towel and making them sock-shaped. Blocking softened up the yarn nicely. The socks also grew a wee bit after blocking, which was great because they were a little tight before and now they fit better. I probably should have made the foot or toe a little longer, but they still fit pretty well.

Knitting these socks was tremendously fun—lace! socks! what’s not to love?—and kind of trying, as I struggled with both the yarn and the pattern.

I have a confession to make. When I made my last post about the clogs, I had already felted them. I was just trying to be funny while waiting for the clogs to dry and for the suede soles I ordered to come in. Hehehe.
