I need your help! The phrase "stitch and bitch" is familiar to needlecrafters everywhere, and yet the people at Sew Fast/Sew Easy insist they were the first to use the term. Help me prove them wrong!
Types of References
I am looking for documented references of "stitch and bitch" as a descriptive term for needlecrafting groups. These references can be:
- Published References from books, newspapers, magazines, or scholarly journals
- Online References from newsgroups or web sites
- Documented Personal Anecdotes
Inclusion Criteria
This is a database of references to "stitch and bitch" in the context of needlecrafting and social gatherings, not a compilation of any random juxtaposition of the words "stitch" and "bitch. Thus, it must be clear from the context of the submitted quote that "stitch and bitch" is being used to refer to a needlecraft such as knitting, crocheting, sewing, or quilting, or a social gathering of some sort.
In addition, all submissions must pre-date November 1, 1998--the earlier, the better--as that is the date that Sew Fast/Sew Easy has listed as their first use on their "Stitch and Bitch Cafe" trademark registration. Un-dated submissions will not be accepted.
Personal anecdotes must be dated and accompanied by some sort of documentation. For example, you could submit a scan of an old "stitch and bitch" newsletter or college yearbook with a reference to a "stitch and bitch" group. By submitting images or other supporting documentation, you are granting me permission to post them in the database.
Reference Format
For the most part, items in the database are formatted using the MLA citation format. I have deviated from this format for online references, as I feel that the string of dates required by MLA style--the date of publication and the date of online retrieval are given back-to-back--is confusing and posting a complete URL seems unnecessary given that I can just link to the page from within the reference.
Do not worry about formatting your references. However, you should consult an MLA Citation Guide to make sure your submission contains all the required information.
Submit a Reference
Please email your "stitch and bitch" references to yvonne@spamcop.net. Your submission must include:
-
All the information required for a full citation in MLA style. This includes authors, titles, dates, page numbers, and URLs when applicable. If you searched a database to find the reference, you should also include the name of the database (e.g., LexisNexis).
-
A selected "stitch and bitch" quote. Quotes from books should include a page number and which edition of the book you are referring to.
-
Your name/alias and contact information so that I can credit you for the submission, or a note that you would like to remain anonymous. Please note that you cannot remain anonymous if you submit a personal anecdote; I need a way for people to contact you so they can verify the story and/or get more information.
Corrections to posted references are also welcome.
