Stitch Revisited

Jenna has a new post up about the Stitch and/&/’n Bitch/SnB case. It’s got a ridiculously active comments thread and Jenna’s been awesome about answering like, a billion and one questions. You’ll see me posting a few times in there (including once when I provided some not-completely-correct information; oops).

I suppose that I should state for the record that I am not particularly angered by the whole situation. I have a great interest in intellectual property law and I do think that there is something deeply awry here, but that feeling is mostly analytical and not emotional.

I do not belong to an organized SnB group and probably would not buy any of the knitting kits/knitting products that Debbie Stoller would produce under her trademark, if it is approved, nor would I watch her TV show. I don’t sew beyond finishing my knitting and thus have no use for Voldemort either, so personally speaking, I am thoroughly unaffected by the whole situation.

But if Voldemort is reading, it might do you good to hire a new marketing/PR person, because: dude.

Now that I’ve said that and hopefully primed you to not think of me as an obsessive knitting freak, I would like to introduce you to someone. Meet Liv.

Liv

Liv is not short for Olivia, but for Livid, which accurately describes the emotional state of many knitters who have been personally affected by Voldemort’s actions. Liv has a fraternal twin. I call him Spike, though I suppose there is no reason why he has to be male.

Spike

Let’s just say that artistic inspiration strikes at the oddest times. This morning I was reading the latest on Girl from Auntie and mulling over my “Stitch THIS!” entry when I was struck by the image of an angry ball of yarn poised to stab someone with a knitting needle. I immediately began doodling variations on said ball of yarn.

The original version–which is still sitting on my desk–was drawn onto a sheet of scratch paper that also contains experiment design notes for my latest research project. It had both angry eyebrows and fangs and the yarn arm was coming through the top of his head. Over the course of the day I refined the design to what you see above.

Stitch THIS, Bitch.

And now I am even more tempted to turn the designs into shirts and mugs and buttons and put them up on CafePress. I don’t want to compete with those who are building and organizing the official Voldemort boycott movement though, so if I do decide to merchandise Liv, I may offer her up to the organizers to use as a mascot. Though it would be just my luck that the people at Voldemort would interpret this as a serious threat of knitting needle violence and send me a nastygram of my very own.

In the meantime, if you like Liv and would like to post her on your web site, please e-mail me and let me know (before you actually do it, please). If there’s enough interest, I’ll even make Liv (and Spike) into a variety of web-appropriate sizes and colors. I’ve grown fond of them; you might too!
